Play Therapy
Play therapy is an approach that respects each child’s individual developmental stage and seeks to support them in their own “language”—play.
“Play gives children a chance to practice what they are learning.” – Mr. Rogers
We provide play therapy for children ages 3-12. We utilize non-directed and directed play therapy.
When you come for your first intake session, we will likely meet with just the parent(s). Then, at the second session, we will meet your kiddo! They will be welcomed into our dedicated play therapy room, complete with all kinds of toys including: dress ups for boys and girls, nerf guns, a puppet show tent, a toy kitchen, a toy art studio, beach balls, bubbles, a doll house, and more!
Our play therapists are specifically trained in play therapy through Heartland Play Therapy Institute.

- Strengthen creativity and problem-solving abilities
What Parents in Little Rock, AR Need to Know
How Play Therapy Works:
Play therapy works because play is a natural and essential part of a child’s development. It allows children to process complex experiences in a way that feels safe and manageable. Since young children may not have the words to express big feelings, play becomes their primary language.
What to Expect:
- A structured yet flexible environment where children lead the process
- Non-directive sessions with boundaries to ensure safety and development
- Sessions tailored to your child’s unique emotional and developmental needs
- Regular parent consultations to support progress at home and school
The Therapeutic Process
Children progress through four general stages in play therapy:
- Warm-Up Stage: Exploration of space, therapist, and self
- Aggressive Stage: Testing boundaries and expressing high energy or anxiety
- Regressive Stage: Expressing early developmental needs (nurturing, attachment)
- Mastery Stage: Demonstrating growth, confidence, and emotional strength
Common Myths About Play Therapy
- “It’s just play.” While sessions may look like playtime, each action is rich with meaning. Therapists are trained to interpret themes and support emotional healing.
- “Any therapist can do play therapy.” True play therapy requires specialized training.
Creating a Safe, Structured Play Environment
Our Little Rock play therapy room is carefully curated to include toys and tools that allow for:
- Creative expression (crayons, puppets, Play-Doh)
- Emotional release (sand trays, bop bags)
- Symbolic play (dollhouses, medical kits)
- Real-life role play (baby bottles, kitchen sets)
Toys are selected to promote emotional growth, build resilience, and support brain development.
